Program D "Sustainable Steel Manufacturing" is seeking an enthusiastic and high-achieving student, committed to pursuing a challenging PhD project in slag-refractory interactions. The overall aim of the project is to develop a fundamental understanding of slag-refractory attack in a steelmaking vessel with a view to improving the vessels life. The Steel Research Hub is committed to industry-relevant outcomes, therefore, the successful candidate will be expected to work closely with industry-based researchers. Required knowledge, skills and experience are as follows:
- A bachelor degree, with a first-class or second-class upper division standing, in metallurgy/materials/chemical engineering from a reputable institution;
- A strong background in thermodynamics and kinetics of processes;
- Knowledge of industry steel industry;
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and written presentation skills; and
- Previous research experience with demonstrated achievements such as high quality publications is desirable but not essential.

PhD Scholarship Opportunity
Solutions for Improved Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) in Light Weight Apartment Buildings
AU$30,000 PER YEAR (3 YEAR MAX)
It is widely recognised that the increasing urbanisation of Australian cities will shift our housing stock from the current predominance of detached dwellings to higher density living in urban apartments.
This exciting research project is focussed on firstly understanding Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) in existing apartment buildings, and secondly developing new technologies and systems to improve IEQ in new light weight, cold formed steel apartment buildings. This will particularly focus on making the best use of the external surfaces or ‘envelope’ of these buildings to improve IEQ parameters such as access to fresh air and daylight, thermal comfort, noise reduction, etc.
The successful candidate for this PhD scholarship will work within a broader project to develop and improve advanced multi-functional steel-intensive wall and roof cladding systems, and develop systems and strategies to improve the IEQ and health of the occupants, as well as reduce building operational energy costs and life-cycle greenhouse emissions. The candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with, and be mentored by, industry partners. The project is funded by the ARC Research Hub for Australian Steel Manufacturing.
The PhD candidate will be based at the Sustainable Buildings Research Centre (SBRC), University of Wollongong (UOW). The SBRC building is one of the most sustainable buildings in Australia, and is a net zero energy building that offers state-of-the-art research facilities. http://sbrc.uow.edu.au/
The PhD project will include the following objectives. 1. Evaluation of IEQ (including thermal comfort, ventilation/indoor air quality and noise levels) in existing mid-rise apartment buildings using both experimental field work and numerical modelling (using simulation tools such as EnergyPlus, TRNSYS, etc); 2. The development and evaluation of technical solutions to improve thermal comfort, air quality and acoustic performance, and increase the thermal mass of lightweight, cold-formed steel systems of construction for apartments. This may include the development and assessment of passive and mechanical ventilation systems where appropriate. 3. Review and benchmarking of international IEQ metrics and standards and development of a suitable Australian IEQ metric applicable to mid-rise residential buildings.
To be successful you will have a First Class honours Bachelor of Engineering degree, or equivalent, in a discipline relevant to this project (e.g. Mechanical, Environmental, Mechatronics, Civil, Building Services, etc). Applicants must demonstrate that they have 2 completed previous research training, e.g. having undertaken a thesis/project involving research methods. Knowledge and experience in building physics, and experimental and/or theoretical building performance analysis techniques are desirable. Experience and interest in sustainability and sustainable buildings is also desirable. The successful applicant will enrol in a PhD in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences at the University of Wollongong. The scholarship is open to both Australian and International applicants.

Two top-ranked students chosen as Fellows for their host countries as part of the 2016 New Colombo Plan.
Two top-ranked candidates from UOW have been selected as Fellows for their host countries as part of the 2016 New Colombo Plan (NCP) Scholars program, announced at a gala event in Canberra.
They received their fellowships from the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon Julie Bishop, MP, and the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) sponsored event. UOW's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Wellings, CBE, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Strategy), Professor Joe Chicharo were among the guests.
Joshua Montgomery, 22, a second year Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences student was named NCP Bhutan Fellow and Yang-Ming Goh, 20, a second year Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Scholar was named NCP China Fellow.
These titles are awarded to the highest-ranked NCP scholars in each host location. For each location within the Indo-Pacific region, the top-ranked candidates are acknowledged as NCP Fellows. In addition to the benefits provided to all scholars, NCP Fellows are awarded A$1,000 to purchase study or learning materials in preparation for or during their NCP scholarship.
Fellows are encouraged to play a strong role in promoting the NCP while in-country on their scholarship program and as part of the NCP alumni network. In this regard they may also be invited to participate in particular activities and events, either in Australia or offshore.
Joshua's host university will be the Royal University of Bhutan. Hailing from Canberra, Joshua described UOW as a "fantastic university" and he was hoping his time overseas would help him find the direction he wants to take within the public health system.
He hasn't ruled out working in an area like 'Doctors Without Borders' within the Pacific region. Joshua will be spending several months at Mahidol University in Thailand before going to Bhutan.
Yang-Ming's host university will be Beihang University in China. Originally from Newcastle, Yang-Ming, an electrical engineering student who is on a BlueScope cadetship, said she loved being in Wollongong and hoped the fellowship would lead her to "discover more down the track".
As an accomplished pianist, music also plays a major part in her life.
She once thought music could be her career. However, Yang-Ming believes that through electrical engineering she can have a massive influence on our future. Yang-Ming hopes to work in the fields of power generation and green energy.
Two other NCP Scholars from the University of Wollongong were also announced at the gala event. Ahmad Khochaiche, 21, a third year student undertaking a Bachelor of Commerce (Dean's Scholar) degree will have as his host institution Nanyang Technological University while Hugh Cooney, 19, a first year Bachelor of Mathematics (Advanced) will also be studying at Nanyang Technological University.
The NCP is a signature initiative of the Australian Government which aims to lift knowledge of the Indo Pacific in Australia by supporting Australian undergraduates to study and undertake internships in the region.
It involves a scholarships program for study of up to one year and internships or mentorships, and a flexible mobility grant for both short and longer-term study, internships, mentorships, practicums and research.

Executive Dean Chris Cook visits Beijing Jiatong University (BJTU) with whom UOW has a Mechatronic Engineering program with. Professor Xinhua Deng was on hand, former Endeavour Scholar to UOW, to greet Professor Cook, as was the international manager J.J. and other teaching and research staff. Thank you BJTU for hosting Chris, we are so glad that he got an opportunity to meet the students and staff again post the launch of our joint program.
In March 2015, USTB invited UOW's Deputy Vice Chancellor of Strategy, Prof Joe Chicharo to visit USTB on a special week-long list of activities. Instead, executive Dean of EIS and Professor Huijun Li visited USTB for international strategy and collaboration talks among 25 other top universities in the world (by invitation).
USTB's open day coincided with this event and was also a huge success with so much local Beijing talent considering research abroad at UOW! We welcome students to apply and come to beautiful Wollongong!
What an incredible experience it was to travel to Delhi for the IEEE Green Computing and Internet of Things Conference! Met so many wonderful students and staff from across India and surrounding nations, but especially beautiful hearts at Galgotias College of Engineering and Technology.
I was so impressed by the vast talent of students, who not only were keen engineers and technologists but also multi-talented singers, dancers, actors and MCs!

Such an exceptional conference- and likely the best IEEE conference I've ever been to- well organised, entertaining, precision organisation in sessions and keynotes, certificates, kind words and generosity. What incredible volunteers that gathered at this event- and so "Indian" in reception!
Great local food! Great folk music! A top variety night! All of it student driven.
And most of all about 800 IEEE peer-reviewed papers, posters, industry submissions on something I deem to be the number 1 thing that engineers should be focused on-- sustainability.
