The International Workshop on Infrastructure Applications of FRP Composites was held on 7 December, 2015 at the University of Wollongong. The main focus of this workshop was to discuss the many exciting opportunities for the use of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in various infrastructure projects. FRP composites have been widely used in the aerospace, boat building and wind energy industries due to their excellent corrosion resistance and high strength-to-weight ratios; they are also gaining popularity in construction.
A total of 11 presentations were given at the workshop. The topics examined included: (1) strengthening of existing structures; (2) hybrid structures of FRP and other materials; (3) seismic retrofit of concrete structures; (4) fire resistance design; (5) mining applications; (6) impact behaviour; and (7) future opportunities.
The speakers included world-renowned experts from international and local universities (e.g. Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, Chair Professor of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Prof. Jian-Fei Chen, Professor of Queen’s University Belfast and President of International Institute for FRP in Construction). The workshop attracted around 50 attendees including structural engineers, researchers, practitioners, industry partners and research students.
