School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics Teaching Seminar - All welcome When : 10.30 - 11.30, Friday 6 November 2015 Where: 6.210
Speaker: Dr Deb King, University of Melbourne
Title: MathsAssess: Implementing criteria-based assessment
Abstract: Assessment criteria articulate to students what they are required to do to complete a task successfully or to achieve a particular grade. While assessment criteria are widely used in many disciplines, they are not commonly present in the context of undergraduate mathematics. This seminar will look at language to use and guidelines to follow when designing assessment criteria for mathematics, as well as worked examples illustrating their use. The presentation is based on work undertaken as part of the OLT-funded project Developing a shared understanding of assessment criteria and standards for undergraduate mathematics (2012)
About the speaker: Dr Deb King is the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Programs in the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne. Deb was the Director of First Year Studies and Director of the Mathematics and Statistics Learning Centre for seven years. Deb is now the Department of Mathematics and Statistics Coordinator of Learning and Teaching Innovation. Not only was Deb on the mathsAssess team, she was the lead on a second OLT-funded project Building leadership capacity in university first year learning and teaching in the mathematical sciences (2012-2014). This project resulted in the FYiMaths (First Year in Maths) academic network and lead the campaign to re-introduce pre-requisites for the mathematical sciences at Australian universities.
The seminar will be followed by morning tea at 11.30.
