SEMINAR: The Resource Optimization for Large-Scale Graph Processing in Cloud Environment

ABSTRACT: The graph processing applications, such as Social Network analysis and Semantic Web analysis, are increasing popular in these years. Many cloud-computing-based graph computation frameworks have been developed to handle the massive graph data. The recent works mainly focus on the designs and the optimization techniques of the frameworks, but few of them optimize the underlining resource allocation that may significantly impact computation efficiency. In order to improve the efficiency of graph computation through optimizing the resource allocation, our lab plan to propose relevant optimization mechanisms. The optimization mechanisms are based on the virtual machines, aiming to optimize the resource requirement, the resource allocation and the resource re-allocation respectively. There are three main future research fields, (1) propose a personalized graph partition algorithm to reduce the resource requirement; (2)propose a topology-aware virtual resource allocation mechanism to optimizes the resource allocation when initializing the graph applications; (3)investigate a resource requirement prediction technique for graph computation and propose a resource-pattern-aware re-allocation technique which adjusts the allocation of the virtual resource on-line when the graph applications are performing. Moreover, according to the research proposals, we have made some real progress where an application-aware dynamic partition strategy for large-scale graph has been proposed. And I will give a brief introduction about this work.
BIO: Dr. DONG Fang is currently an associate professor at Southeast University, the general secretary of ACM Nanjing chapter and the deputy secretary of big data committee of Jiangsu computer society. He received bachelor and master degree from Nanjing University of Science and Technology, China in June 2004 and 2006 and PhD degree from Southeast University, China in Mar 2011, and then work in Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of Network & Information Security. Dr. DONG's research interests largely lie in the areas of big data and cloud computing. He has been responsible for 2 NSFC projects and several provincial and ministerial projects. He also has participated in the international project of physics experiment "Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS)" led by Nobel Prize winner, Prof. Samuel C. C. Ting and been responsible for establishment of Southeast university cloud computing center and Scientific Operation Center for AMS (AMS-SOC). Dr. DONG has published more than 40 research papers on the well-known journals and conference proceedings. He has been Organization Chair, Guest Editor, PC Member for several journals and conferences published by IEEE, Elsevier and Springer.
